Bodegas y Viñedos Monteabellón

Our grapes

While most of the grapes are the tempranillo or tinta del país, variety, there is also around 5% Merlot.

The climate is predominantly dry and sunny. Rains are concentrated in spring and autumn with annual averages of about 500 ml, although the frequent mists around the course of the river Duero are also a source of moisture.

Our soils

The types of soils or the “terroir” will largely determine the type of wine to be made from the grapes harvested there. All our vineyards are spread over several plots and because of their location at different heights they can be classified in 3 areas: Low Zone, Middle Zone and High Zone.

Bodegas y Viñedos Monteabellón

Low zone

Sandy loam soils with pebbles.
Altitude 760-800m.

Bodegas y Viñedos Monteabellón

Low zone

The first area would be the plots located at a lower height and closer to the Duero River from which we make our younger wines. These plots are called: Los Miles, Valcavada, Picarillo, Monroy and Valdián.

Bright, fresh and easy to drink wines. Soils with gravel or pebbles help with aeration and drainage, keeping in the heat accumulated by the daytime sun at night. The result, young fruity wines as is the case of Avaniel Rosé, Avaniel Red and Monteabellón 5 months.

Middle zone

Clay loam soil.
Altitude 800 – 830m

Middle zone

The second area is formed by the plots farthest from the Duero River and at a higher altitude. They are clay loam soils containing limestone and clay. These plots are ideal for making Crianza wines. Pascuala, Lopa, San Juan, Rillosa, Linares, Valdezate, Tras de la Rubiera, Pozo and Madriles are the names of the plots that can be found in this middle zone.

Very elegant wines with volume, tannins, and high fruit concentration. These soils differ by retaining nutrients and water well. From there come wines such as Monteabellón 14 Meses and Finca Matambres.

High zone

Clay-calcareous soil with abundant limestone.
Altitude 830 -950 m

High zone

The third area comprises the vineyards at the highest altitude where stony soils have a high limestone content. Their low water retention and the extreme atmospheric conditions to which these plots are subjected produce the perfect fruit to produce wines for long periods of ageing. This area is comprised by plots such as La Blanquera, Pedregal, Valduvienzas, Matambres and Acediano.

Wines with great body, quality, very good for ageing. Aromatic, complex and with good alcohol content. Lands that gave birth to Finca la Blanquera, a wine characterized by its complexity and structure, as well as its subtlety.
